Finding A better way for cacao agriculture

We are so obsessed with cacao that we bought the oldest working cacao farm in Saint Lucia – the Rabot Estate. And today, a proportion of our annual profits are invested into our sustainable – what we call gentle farming – initiatives. Your visit to Rabot Hotel and Project Chocolat supports us in our continued mission to drive positive change for nature and farmers through a gentle cacao-farming approach.

In 2006, Hotel Chocolat bought the 140-acre estate that would become home to our very own cacao farm. Back then, it was tired and overgrown, and we have worked to transform it into the organic, sustainable, cacao farm that it is now.

Alongside becoming cacao growers ourselves, we set out to revive the industry on the island with our Island Growers’ Programme. By providing subsidised seedlings, guaranteeing a market for their cacao and purchasing it wet and processing it ourselves to remove some of the labour, we brought life back to struggling cacao small holds across the island.

Scaling our impact with gentle farming

Working with farmers and experts in both Ghana and Saint Lucia, we began our journey towards a better way of farming cacao 20 years ago. In 2004 we first launched our sustainability and ethical initiatives for cacao, which we now call gentle farming. Today, we follow a set of key gentle farming principles that shape how we farm and the programmes we run in both Saint Lucia and in Ghana, where we source the majority of our cacao that goes into our chocolate ranges in the UK and US.

Cacao growing and the social and environmental challenges surrounding it are complex and nuanced. We continually seek to learn and reflect on the gentle farming techniques we deploy as we continue on our journey for a better way.

Gentle farming principles

The three principles that shape our approach

Championing nature-positive farming practices

We advocate and educate a cacao agroforestry approach, which is based on regenerative practices, and focuses on multi-layered planting of cacao and other trees and crops to create a more diverse and resilient farming system. We also advocate and practise strategic pruning to redirect nutrients to healthier, more productive branches, and encourage the use of organic fertilisers to boost yields naturally, avoiding the long-term damage caused by chemicals.

Empowering farmers to build self-sustaining farms

We see farmers as the true experts. That’s why we advocate peer-to-peer learning and bringing farmers together to provide tailored training. We want to tackle the reality that cacao farming incomes are not where they need to be by ensuring we pay farmers a good price for their cacao. We also equip them with the support and tools needed for nature-positive farming practices that will help boost their yields and the climate resilience of their crops.

Partnering for change, guided by research-led innovation

We collaborate with research partners and local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to expand our expertise and share proven practices. We’re able to test and learn first-hand on our own cacao farm as well as through our farmer partners, to ensure we are innovating not just for farmers, but as farmers ourselves. We continue to pilot new approaches  with the intention to turn insights into scalable and dynamic solutions to can further develop gentle farming.
