The Rabot Estate, Saint lucia

We’re a luxury British chocolate brand obsessed with cacao

So, we bought and restored a 140-acre Caribbean cacao farm on the island of Saint Lucia.

We, Hotel Chocolat, bought the Rabot Estate in 2006, the oldest cacao farm in Saint Lucia. This was the start of our journey to become cacao growers so we could discover and learn everything about farming this important crop, forging a stronger bond between our customers and the origin of chocolate, cacao.

Since then, the Rabot Estate has become the ultimate place for fellow chocolate-lovers to experience sustainable cacao-growing in action. You can connect directly with chocolate’s source through a unique stay in cacao’s rainforest home at Rabot Hotel, and get hands on at Project Chocolat – where you’ll discover how we get from a cacao seedling to the end product we all know and love.

Becoming cacao growers

We had to start at the beginning

To make some of the best chocolate in the world.

We rolled up our sleeves and got stuck in at the roots of the cacao trees on our cacao farm at the Rabot Estate. We dug deeply, humbly learning the intricacies of growing, fermenting, drying, roasting and conching cacao beans. For the first time, with our support and their know-how, our Saint Lucian farmers grew beans that we created single-origin chocolate from, winning highly acclaimed global awards in the process.

Today, cacao is a successful, and growing, industry on the island and we support over 50 Island Growers with our Gentle farming initiatives.

Hotel Chocolat

It started with spirit

When the very first Hotel Chocolat shop opened its doors to guests in North London, UK, in 2004, it was the start of a revolution in British chocolate. Two entrepreneurs, Angus Thirlwell and Peter Harris, were on a mission to make chocolate exciting again.
Today, we sell our premium chocolate in stores, cafés, outlets and online across the UK, USA, and Japan. Here in Saint Lucia on the Rabot Estate, we grow sustainable cacao have the boutique Rabot Hotel, Restaurant & Spa, and host immersive chocolate tours at Project Chocolat. We are on a continual journey of development and growth, yet everything we do is still guided by the three basic values that we started with – and it always will be…

Originality. Authenticity. Ethics.

Our gentle farming approach

One taste of chocolate can provide so much happiness

But the process of growing cacao to deliver that happiness is not always good for nature or farmers.

Around the world, increasing pressure on farming methods due to low payments for cacao has led to deforestation, poor soil quality, loss of biodiversity and a cycle of hardship for farming families. We believe in working with farmers to develop a better way: one that’s positive for nature and positive for farmers, helping both to thrive.

By becoming cacao farmers, ourselves, we’ve seen the cacao-growing challenges first-hand. Working with farmers and experts in both Ghana and Saint Lucia, we began our journey towards a better way 20 years ago, developing what we call gentle farming. And today we reinvest a proportion of our annual global profits into funding gentle farming initiatives. These include the provision of shade and high-yield cacao tree seedlings, on-farm pruning support and labour, and organic fertiliser workshops.

Island Growers’ Programme

We started this programme in 2008 with the intention to form a revival of the cacao industry in Saint Lucia. Since this began, we have influenced many farmers across the island to establish cacao farms on their estates. It’s available to all farmers on the island and designed with our holistic principles in mind but tailored for local nuance.

Helen’s Daughters

The Helen’s Daughters organisation strive to give rural women farmers the appropriate tools, skills, and support to help increase the production of foods that are consumed on island, particularly in the booming hotel sector. We’re proud to partner with them on our Hotel Chocolat Apprenticeship Farm at Project Chocolat.
